This course provides an overview of the academic framework and progression within the Buddhist Studies major. It offers guidance on career opportunities after graduation and facilitates the creation of a personalized curriculum plan based on individual career objectives. Through this process, new students will be equipped to navigate their coursework with a clear, career-oriented perspective.

This course leads students to learn what is needed(eg. learning foreign languages such as Chinese). Students are introduced to prepare for Buddhist Studies.

The origin, development, and decline of Indian Buddhism ; historical outline of general Indian Buddhism : to focus on easy and exact understanding of Indian Buddhism that is origin of Buddhism.

While maintaining a certain part of this traditional framework of Buddhist studies, it is necessary to find Buddhist talents who have cultivated new curriculum and major skills that meet the needs of rapidly changing modern society by introducing a new educational method in line with the Fourth Industrial Revolution. By introducing the use of AI technology and big data required in modern society into Buddhist studies research, we intend to produce convergent talents who can learn and practice not only Buddhist studies but also digital utilization required in modern society.

We look into the life ot the historical Buddha and his teachings. we focus on the main teachings such as Karma, Dependent Origination, Four Noble Truths. we discuss how the Buddhist community survive after the death of the Buddha.

Korean Buddhism is distinguished from other traditions of Buddhism. A variety of information on Korean Buddhism is to be presented with pictures if possible. However, the focus will be on Jogye Order, the biggest Buddhist order in Korea.

It is a course of history of Chan schools in China where the tradition had been developed.

With a general surveying on the history of Chinese Buddhism from the age of early transmission of Indian Buddhism to the age of modern Buddhist studies, we will translate and explain the meaning of some of Chinese Buddhist scriptures of each age.

Korean Buddhism, which has been matured and fermented in soil, weather, nature and culture of Korea, has created recognition systems and concept systems of Korea people as Korean representative religion with Pungryu interpenetrated Cheonsin Devotion, Sansin Devotion and Shaman Devotion. In other words, Korean Buddhism completed the Buddhism of ‘mix’ and ‘boiling’ while advancing to ‘one vehicle’ or ‘one Mahayana’ Buddhism, which harmonizes Huayan and Vijnanavada or Chan and Huayan through the sign of ‘nature’ and ‘character’ unlike Indian Buddhism, which established the foundation of Mahayana Buddhism represented by Madyamika and consciousness-only through the sign of ‘emptiness’ and ‘existence’ or Chinese Buddhism, which founded one vehicle Buddhism of Tiantai, Huayan, Chan and pure land through the sign of ‘principal’ and ‘affair’. The purpose of this lecture is to research synthetic and unique character of Korean Buddhism Philosophy, Korean representative religion, which created ‘one vehicle’ Buddhism beyond Mahayana being opposite to Hanayana and ‘one Mahayana’ Buddhism embracing Mahayana being denied as an opposite Buddhism of Hanayana.

It is a theoretical study about Seon practice in which what is the purpose and principle of Seon practice and how practitioners should approach the Seon practice.

Students are expected to learn to read Buddhist texts in Chinese. Chinese Buddhist texts range from Agama in early Buddhism to major Mahayana texts. If necessary, Confucian texts and English translation relating to the Chinese Buddhist texts are to be compared.

It is a course of Buddhist ethics or morality in which students should study Vinaya scriptures, the texts of traditional Buddhist precepts, including the members of Sangha and the lay Buddhists.

The course will deal with major aspects of Mahayana Buddhism lecturing on background of arising of Mahayana Buddhism major texts including commentarial literatures. Mahayana Buddhism is to be compared with early Buddhism and Abhidharma Buddhism. Major doctrines. such as idea of Bodhisattva will be explained.

Psychology of religion consists of the application of psychological methods and interpretive frameworks to religious traditions, as well as to both religious and irreligious individuals. This course investigates how religious expressions are treated by major psychological theorists such as Freud, Jung, and James.

In this lecture we will study on Vijñaptimātra thought. Vijñaptimātra thought is not only an Epistemology but also a theory of Mahāyāna practice. At first we will review the world view of Vijñaptimātra thought, and then introduce some important scriptures and treatises. Based on these studies we will compare the Vijñaptimātra thought with Western Philosophies.

Mādhyamika Philosophy was created by Nāgārjuna who have been called as the father of Mahāyāna Buddhism. We will study on the Emptiness philosophy of Nāgārjuna based on his treatise Madhyamaka Kārikā. Then we will study on the background, birth and development of Mādhyamika Philosophy. At the end of this lecture we will study on Sān-lūn thought that was established in China after translating the Madhyamaka treatises.

This course provides students with understanding of the main history of various religious traditions such as primitive religions, shamanism, folk religions of Korea as well as Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, confucianism, Taoism.

The examination of the contents and its methods of the desirable Seon culture through the theory and practice of the Seon culture which exists in various fields of the life of modern people.

In Tiān-Tai treatises we can find not only it's ontology but also it's practice technique. It was constructed based on the teachings of Saddharma-puṇḍarīka Sūtra. We will study on Zhì-yǐ's holistic attitude and his critical classification of Buddhist doctrines.

It is a course of studying Avatamsaka-sutra and the history and culture of this Mahayana doctrine and tradition which has developed as an independent Buddhist school in China and Korea.

To fully understand Buddhist Studies, an accurate comprehension of neighbor religions is demanded. Especially, around the circumstance of stepping into the society after graduation as a Buddhist, the grasp about a number of neighbor religious people who might face with is also inevitable. The interest, consideration, and strategy on neighbor religion are points of core competencies for compassion which is the biggest principle of Buddhism. At the same time, this class will provide surpassing viewpoint of various social discrimination as religious descrimination, culture discrimination, discrimination against women, distinction of wealth and poverty etc. in this multi-cultural, multi-religious society.

It is a course of the history of Korean Seon thoughts from its introduction to Silla to the present, including important thoughts of influential Seon Masters and developments of Seon Schools in Korea.

This course offers an in-depth investigation into the conceptual and philosophical evolution of the Tathāgata—from its early Buddhist foundations to its mature articulation in Mahāyāna traditions—by examining doctrines such as Tathāgatagarbha, Buddha-nature, and the Dharmakāya, and by comparatively analyzing Indian and East Asian interpretive frameworks through rigorous textual, historical, and doctrinal methodologies.

This course provides the students with the proper understanding of the core thoughts of Seon Buddhism. The students are expected to have the intellectual skills necessary for reflective capability through the teachings of Buddhist Scriptures and Analects, so that they can apply the skillful methods to the Seon-practice and the Bodhisattva Path in order to achieve the wisdom, loving kindness and compassion.

Students will learn basic knowledge while reading 『Diamond Sutra』 and 「jeondeungbeobeo」 and acquire reading ability. And study Buddhist scriptures, as well as the spirit of seon Buddhism.

Unlike general organizations, temple management has the distinctiveness of cultural management. This class demonstrates the fundamental characteristics of temple management as cultural management. Additionally, by examining the success and failure cases of temple management, it was designed to understand more pertinent temple management methodologies. This provides a framework for understanding temples as a cultural management platform.

Objective study of world religions: their origins, developments, and histories. Special attention will be given to the issue of the historical nature of religions and hermeneutical method of interpretations.

This course investigates the historical formation, institutional development, organizational structure, disciplinary systems, and socio-political functions of the Buddhist monastic order by analyzing the evolution of Vinaya traditions, ordination systems, gendered monastic communities, economic bases, and the dynamic interactions between the saṅgha, state authorities, and local societies across India, Central Asia, and East Asia.

This course is offered due to the plan for particularization of culture and cultural contents in the Buddhist Studies department. It is necessary to understand the history of interchange of Buddhism and Buddhist culture for improving capabilities of particularization in the filed of culture and cultural contents. This class explores the spread of Buddhism in East Asia through Central Asia and Southeast Asia and the growth process of Buddhism as major religious culture in Southeast Asia and East Asia. It also examines the process of acculturation of various cultural elements in Buddhism through the interaction between and within areas and localization of Buddhism through the bilateral exchanges between Buddhism and local culture. Thus, this class will provide the general understanding of the history of Buddhist cultural exchange and basic characteristics of Buddhist thoughts and culture.

Student will observe or take part in developing Buddhist cultural contents in Buddhist News company or Buddhist Broad TV or Radio company so as to create their own Buddhist contents for people in general.

Much of religious activity is educational. This course explores the nature and nature of religious education and the contents and practice of specific religious education in accordance with established curriculum. This course is eventually a lesson for practicing at school.

Religious reality transcends logic. But the transcendental reality is also expressed in logic. Therefore, all religious activities should be expressed or stated logically. Actually, this course is a study for a logical statement of transcendental reality.

Religious teachers must first identify religious texts in detail, secondly develop new textbooks, Third, devising new teaching methods. Fourth, it should actually be applicable to students. In this course, students will practice the four activities using textbooks and analyzing classroom videos prepared for field practice.
